The season of gift giving and coziness is upon us. I love it!!! Long before I read The Little Book of Hygge, written by Meik Wiking, the CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen, I had been practicing it. Put simply, hygge is the art of enjoying life’s simple pleasures. Much of the hype we hear about hygge focuses on the winter months, but it’s truly a lifestyle that can be embraced during all four seasons. To learn more about this Danish practice, click here. It is not necessary to buy expensive things to cultivate hygge in your life; in fact, my understanding is that it’s more of an experience… and mindfulness plays a big part.
Hygge can be experienced in solitude while reading or while having a casual meal with friends. If you’d like to create an environment conducive to hygge, it’s important to think of coziness. Soft lighting, a shelf full of books, and the smell of baking elicit hygge at home. Another key element is to bring nature inside: think of plush lambskins thrown on the sofa or floors, fresh flowers in a ceramic vase, mantlepieces strewn with sea shells or special stones collected on walks.
Perhaps you, or someone you love, is inspired by the concept of hygge. If so, read on. I’ve curated a list of items which would make perfect gifts this holiday season.
Today’s Top 10 Handmade Hygge Gifts
I’ve narrowed it down to three candle holders for this post, but there are many more to choose from on Etsy. See the Moroccan lantern (€89) pictured above, the Robin candle holder(€9.07), and olive wood tealight holder (€9.67) both pictured below.
Choose from several variations of this beautiful Christmas wreath made of pine cones, acorns, cinnamon sticks and oranges: gingerbread, star, reindeer or heart options. (€43.29 depending on size).
Socks & Mittens
Choose from the Snowflake or Wolf set (€51.36), both knit with 100% pure sheep wool, to keep your hands and feet warm this winter.
I adore the beautiful hand glazed stoneware mug (€21.77) pictured above. It would be perfect for hot cups of coffee or tea on cold mornings. Kirsty’s Etsy page says, “The ‘Aurora’ mug is inspired by the vibrant colors of the northern lights. Each mug is an original artisan piece.” Dishwasher and microwave safe.
I selected two A4 art prints from Chloe Jasmine Prints: The Camp Out and Village by the Sea (both €19.38). I love her style and the natural scenes evoked. I’ve also included colorful Wood Prints by artist Lori Portka (€35.48). Be sure to check out her gorgeous 2020 calendar (€24.28) on Etsy.
Check out the gorgeous drum lampshade in Laura Ashley “Garden Birds” fabric (€31.44). Pair with your favorite base for instant country cottage style.
Floral Tea Towel
What’s not to love about this 100% cotton “Audrey” tea towel (€16.14) featuring a pattern of vibrant hand-painted watercolor flowers? It would brighten any kitchen!
This natural handwoven blanket is made of raw organic cotton in Indonesia. It’s hand dyed with natural indigo extract. A truly special gift: 100% hand spun and hand woven cotton with fringes. They seem to be made to order so allow extra time for shipping. Length: 94 Inches; Width: 47 Inches (pictured below, €116.72). Alternatively, the luxurious baby alpaca throw, handmade in the Peruvian Andes, is soft, hypoallergenic and lightweight- not to mention warm! (€127.37, not pictured here).
What list encapsulating hygge decor could omit fairy lights? They are an absolute must! There are a variety to choose from on Etsy, including pretty strings of stars and pine cones (€9.20), but I love these unique, wet-felt Poinsettia fairy lights (€35).
I use a variety of essential oils in my diffuser, as well as in therapeutic massage blends. doTERRA On Guard (€40.68) is my go to blend every winter. It has protective properties to help boost the immune system. This product is safe to ingest, can be used to clean, and will make your home smell divine. Some of my favorite scents are in this blend: Wild Orange Peel, Clove Bud, Cinnamon Leaf, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Leaf, and Rosemary Leaf/Flower essential oils. Aromatherapy qualities: uplifting and energizing. Learn more here.
Although I’m registered as a doTERRA wellness consultant, I’m not affiliated with any of the other retailers I’ve promoted in this post. I do not receive a commission on sales. Prices listed do not include shipping and are subject to change. Any questions should be directed towards the seller on the links provided. I haven’t bought products from any of these shops, but they come highly recommended on Etsy.
I hope you’ve enjoyed viewing these items as much as I have. Hopefully you’ve found a few ideas to make your holiday shopping a little easier! I’d love to hear your tips, ideas or thoughts about hygge in the comment section.
